Kwikset Smartkey locks

At least a few times per week lately, an ASAP Lock & Security Locksmith, will receive a call about a Kwikset Smartkey lock that has malfunctioned.   Folks that have just simply installed them without rekeying and some that have rekeyed and then they have malfunctioned as well.

Simply suffice it to say that it is in this Mesa, AZ Locksmith’s opinion that  Kwikset designed a complicated cylinder and does not practice Quality Assurance before shipping the product out the door.

Indeed the locksmith who is talented with picking, cannot pick the Smartkey lock.  I know. I am a talented locksmith who can pick.  Did I hear a horn blowing somewhere?  LOL.  Truly, if I go to a lockout call with these Smartkey issues, we have to drill the lock to get in.  And drilling this particular lock, can be complicated.   NO, I’m not going to do a step by step about this here on the internet.  Either way, we will drill the lock and replace it if you’d like. 

Who definitely should not by Smartkey locks?  RENTAL PROPERTY OWNERS SHOULD NOT BUY SMARTKEY LOCKS. 

This is because, the key you have to your rental, can be easily changed by your renters!  They can run to home depot and get a new key and the simple tool to change the lock and CHANGE YOUR LOCKS ON YOU!  You know, for privacy. OR maybe so they can live rent free for a few months while you scramble around with Arizona Court and constable service. 

I dunno.  You decide.  Me?  I’d hire a locksmith for my rental property.  It’s safe, convenient and necessary in order to keep chances of renter scam to a minimum.  And renter scam is definitely on the rise. We know. We’re busy with this type of call.
